1.75 million euro investment for a wide range of renovation measures

What began with the start of construction in July of last year has now come to a worthy conclusion with a ceremonial opening to traffic. Numerous renovation and construction measures have been implemented on the L 102 (Veitscher Straße) in the Turnau village of Göriach. "In this precisely 1,230-meter-long section, the roadway, sidewalks, bus stops, and surface drainage were renovated, and the lighting was replaced. The municipality of Turnau is contributing €450,000 of the state's total cost of €1.75 million," said State Minister for Transport Claudia Holzer, looking back on the state-renovated infrastructure. Mayor Stefan Hofer, Deputy Mayor, agrees: "The general renovation of this section of road has been our long-standing dream. I am delighted that we have now been able to realize this with the support of the State of Styria. This represents a vigorous continuation of our goal of building a modern Turnau!"

After milling, the roadway between km 20,770 and km 22,000 was asphalted with a 12 centimetre thick base layer and a four centimetre thick surface course, and the drainage was renewed in the entire rehabilitation section.

The construction project was divided into several sections:

Section “Expansion of the bend”

The expansion of the bend began at the start of the construction lot at approximately the level of the entrance and exit to the existing public car park and ended at km 21.100.

Here, the roadway was also widened, which was mainly possible at the western edge of the roadway, as the eastern edge of the roadway is limited by the existing car park and an existing natural stone screed used to secure the slope.

The existing sidewalk was widened to a minimum width of two meters, and appropriate fall protection with railings was installed. The existing stairs leading from the parking lot to the sidewalk were removed and painted without replacement.

Additional slope protection in the form of a natural stone embankment was required from km 20.780 to km 20.832 along the southern edge of the L 102, with a length of 62 meters and an average height of 2.5 meters. A further natural stone embankment was constructed on the inner edge of the car park as an extension of the existing natural stone embankment, with a length of 24 meters and an average height of 80 centimeters.

Section “Bus stops”

From km 21,100 to km 21,225, the bus stop situation was adapted to the state of the art by creating roadway stops with raised waiting areas.

In the area of the Buchenlandsiedlung the stop towards Göriach was at km 21,196,

The stop towards Turnau town center is located at km 21.135. The 15-meter-long waiting areas were demarcated from the roadway by a granite ledge at least twelve centimeters high and paved with asphalt.

Section “Göriach”

In the final section, "Göriach," from km 21.775 to km 22.000, the bus stops at km 21.788 and km 21.865 were essentially upgraded to state-of-the-art technology. Furthermore, a pedestrian connection was created along the southern edge of the road from the bus stop to Flugplatzweg. The roadway is now at least six meters wide. Due to the structural conditions (building fronts on both sides), three short bottlenecks with sidewalk widths of only 1.25 meters, 1.35 meters, and 1.40 meters could be created over a length of 15 meters. The bus stop towards Turnau town center at km 21.785 was designed as a bus bay with a length of approximately 40 meters and a minimum width of three meters. The waiting area, raised by at least 12 centimeters with granite curbs, is two meters wide and paved with asphalt. In the area of the entrance route, the crossing aid was rebuilt at km 21.803 with a width of three meters. The original bus bay in the curve area toward Turnau-Au was removed and rebuilt at km 21.849 as a 15-meter-long roadway stop with a raised, two-meter-wide waiting area.

Sidewalks:

The existing sidewalks along the L 102 were renovated, meaning the asphalt surface and granite paving stones along the roadway were replaced. The sidewalk width was maintained at a minimum of one and a half meters in densely built-up areas, and widened to two meters in areas where public land was available or private land was ceded. New, two-meter-wide sidewalks were constructed over a total length of approximately 350 meters.
